OPEN CALL, IICD INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS RESIDENCY, 2017

International Institute for Creative Development Artists residency is created to investigate, amongst other important things, the thought process of creating. It is an open minded-thematic programme that focuses on the artist’s insights, narratives and trajectory in the creation of art.
Designed to facilitate a hybrid co-creating environment for local and international artists coming together to share experiences and creativity. Curated by multiple curators unlike other residencies, participants get to explore personal ideas and techniques in a shared space, exposing and connecting their creative energies in a collective frequency that leads to discovering new ideas, and establishing new frontiers of knowledge and creativity.
This year’s residency will stimulate your creative ideologies, starting with individual reviews with visiting curators in an intense learning environment, as artists would be exposed to works of other artists, creative journals and studios, aimed at building your creative vocabulary, narratives and presentation skills. Included in the programme are open studios, artists’ talks, travels, studio visits and final exhibition.
At the end of one month, participating artists would have realized deeper and new understanding of their creative thought process, its challenges and dynamics, it’s role in our contemporary society, how socio-political global issues relates and influences our thoughts, how best to interpret them in form of social inventions, in realizing our ability to juxtapose metaphors that aligns with their true creative proclivities.
About the Residency
In 2015 the International Institute for Creative Development, Abuja began the first and only innovative artists residency in Abuja which explored the process of creating and the idea of juxtaposing opposite metaphors, like South and North, displacement and proximity, location and movement, object and the subject; all coming together to bring about a fusion of ideas by the three artists in residence.
Considering the creative landscape of Abuja, the aspect of context in-depth and art education, research and critical thinking process and methodologies are not popular dialogue or artistic practice. The residency bridges the gaps and guaranteed continued cultural and civil interaction between the artist and his audience, who are constantly seeking and demanding for something new. The programme was also designed to bring together the artists, the creative audience and the public with its open studio events. Who Can Apply?
We welcome Applications from local and International Artists (Female and Male).
■ Visual Artists can be working in any media - painting, sculpture, textile, ceramics, photography, video,
film and performance art.
■ Applications are open to all artists (including self-taught artists) who have been professionally active
for at least 5 years.
Conditions of acceptance:
All Participants MUST be available for the complete 30 days. Please do not apply if you cannot attend the entire programme.

Residency Timeline: November 1st to 30th, 2017.
The residency will be an intensive 30-day (4 weeks) programme facilitated by experienced local and
international artists, critics, and curators including a weekend in Lagos and Artist talks at CCA, Lagos, Visit to Artists Studios and Open Studio.
Residency sections will commence daily at 9.30am and end at 5.30pm Monday to Saturday for the first two weeks after which the timetable we will adjust in line resident artists working plans.
Artist in Residency are required to achieve individual works to be exhibited at the last week of the residency.
Residency Costs
Participation fee is USD2500 per Artist.
Covers: Accommodation for One Month, light breakfast at the Center, local Travels to study and
research venues (e.g Lagos)
Excursion Fee USD 250
Nigerian Artist that has a place to stay in Abuja will be allowed to Pay USD 1000 or its equivalent at
Current Bank Rates and again this is dependent on the number sponsorship secured.
All participants MUST pay the participation fee which goes towards running the programme at the beginning, we have a modest production budget aimed at achieving a final presentation, exhibition and book.
This residency is a self-funded artists residency programme and participants are expected to bear their
travel costs to and from Abuja as well as their daily expenses and living costs (feeding, moving across
the city etc.) for the duration of the programme. ( Though we have a car and driver, to help convey artists on a planned or group activities and errands etc)
A single room can be requested but comes at an additional cost to the participant.
Selected participants should endeavor to pay on or before the 10th of October, 2016, after which the
slot will be allocated to artists on the waiting list.

How Do I Apply?

1. Complete and sign the application form ( Request form: nduwhite@gmail.com )
2. Current resume/CV: 3 pages maximum.
3. A short possible project proposal or synopsis of projects to embark on while on residency. The proposal should be a minimum of 300 and maximum 500 words. This is compulsory. Application without it, will not be considered.
4. Documentation of your work. You can either submit images OR video documentation, NOT both. We review video documentation ONLY for artists whose work is time-based, interactive, web-based, kinetic, film, video and performance. If you work with installation, site-specific, painting, sculpture and/or drawing, you MUST submit images.
6. IMAGES: Ten (10) jpeg images, at 180 DPI resolution minimum, maximum file size 200kb. Heavy files will not be reviewed. Images must be titled with your last name, first name, number with no spacing: e.g.: NduwhiteNdubuisi1.jpg, NduwhiteNdubuisi2.jpg.
7. IMPORTANT: we only accept images in jpegs or pdfs. Do not submit physical works please.

For International artists, we can facilitate sponsorship from your embassy here in Abuja, however this is not a guaranteed.
NOTE: We advise you to apply for travel funding whether or not your participation in the programme has been confirmed so as to not miss the application deadlines, IICDCENTER will also work with you to identify and apply for funding and Visa.
